How Austin Energy interconnection works in practice
Austin Energy is a municipal utility, so none of the Texas deregulated-market machinery applies: no REPs, no shopping for buyback plans. Interconnection is an agreement with the city, an electrical inspection, and the tariff requires approval before energizing, with the whole process typically running four to six weeks.
There is no net metering here in any form. It's buy-all, credit-all: every kWh you generate is credited at the Value of Solar rate, currently 9.91 cents residential, recalculated every three years with the next update due November 2026, while every kWh you consume bills at retail. A dedicated production meter records all generation by design.
The $2,500 rebate requires an Austin Energy approved contractor plus their solar education course, which means pure DIY installs interconnect fine but forfeit the rebate. Credits roll monthly, can't be transferred or cashed out, and die with the account.
