Potomac Edison solar interconnection: what it requires before you energize

How does Potomac Edison detect unpermitted backfeed?

FirstEnergy's own warning: depending on your existing meter, exports can register as consumption and you get billed for what you generate documented

What happens if they catch you?

Small and DIY interconnection requirements

Portal-only since June 2025, emailed and faxed applications are no longer accepted, and there's now an application fee paid at submission. UL1741-SB inverters need the utility's settings file installed, same FirstEnergy quirk as JCP&L. documented

No energizing before electrical inspection and a signed Certificate of Completion. The bidirectional meter swap after approval can take weeks, and exports earn nothing until it's in. documented

MD side: 1:1 net metering with a choice, the default is an annual April payout at the commodity rate, you must opt in to bank credits at retail instead. Limited-export agreements are a documented option in MD. documented

WV panhandle side: residential cap 25 kW, and after the 2024 rate case new customers get a 9.34c/kWh credit rate instead of 1:1, existing customers grandfathered. documented
