Small and DIY interconnection requirements

NMIN application through their self-service portal, Adobe Sign signatures from both customer and vendor, and a contingent approval email before you install. documented

Self-installers are named in Dominion's own process: after install, certification comes from a licensed Virginia electrician or a passed local inspection, either path works, and the vendor or self-installer uploads the proof to close Section 5. documented

Dominion explicitly does not review your equipment choice, installation method, or location, only grid compatibility per UL 1741 and IEEE 1547. Code compliance is entirely on you and your AHJ. documented

Monthly credits carry forward and get applied against future net consumption, and you can sell your RECs to Dominion or on the open market. documented

Reported timeline, July 2026: about 18 days from passed city inspection to PTO, but 13 of those were waiting on a battery form Dominion requested late in the process. Once the final form went in, PTO was granted within two hours. Lesson: the queue moves fast, incomplete files don't, ask what's outstanding. reported

How Dominion Energy interconnection works in practice

Virginia interconnection for most of the state means Dominion Energy's process: the NMIN application through their self-service portal, Adobe Sign signatures from customer and vendor, and a contingent approval email before installation begins. Self-installers are named in Dominion's own process documents, and certification after install comes from either a licensed Virginia electrician or a passed local inspection.

Virginia's net metering credits roll forward monthly, RECs are sellable, and the state's plug-in solar law went live in July 2026, exempting qualifying small plug-in systems from the full interconnection process.

Dominion explicitly reviews only grid compatibility, UL 1741 and IEEE 1547 conformance, not your equipment choices or installation method. Code compliance sits entirely with you and your local AHJ, which is unusual candor about where their review stops.

Verify your export before Dominion Energy does

Dominion Energy nets your exports, but the meter still logs every reverse-flow interval, including ones you didn't plan. Worth knowing your real number before they do.

Every claim above is evidence-graded: documented means it traces to the tariff or the utility's own filings, reported means a dated community report. The full table covers 60 utilities: see all of Gridrules.
